Transition and Tempo

Please Note:The practice is designed to bring value across multiple age levels. You can use this as a foundation to build and develop your own practice. With that being said, we highly encourage you to adjust the drills based on your team’s age and skill levels. Lacrosse Drive should always be used as a starting point — you can make drills easier or harder by changing the constraints.

To make a drill easier, you might Increase the playing area, reduce the number of defenders or rules, add time or space to make decisions

Activities
  1. Partner Passing – Upfield
  2. 43 Clearing Game
  3. Continuous 3v3 Game
  4. 4v4 + X
Partner Passing – Upfield - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

Set Up

Put players in lines, about 5-8 yards away. They will run forward while passing the ball back and forth. Players must keep their stick in the outside/upfield hand, so one line is catching/throwing righty while the other executes left. Have them run the width of the field as 1 rep. Complete again so players can work on their opposite hands

Coaching Points & Principles

Partner Pass Preview
  • Keep your stick up as a target for your teammate when you don’t have the ball
  • We are running upfield, not shuffling.. try to keep the hips/shoulders in that direction
  • Passing – Make good passes keep the ball in the air so your teammate can make an easy catch
43 Clearing Game - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

A great small sided game that works on clearing and riding!

Set Up

Create a playing area on one half of the field area. Add a second goal at the midfield line. There will be 4 clearing players and 3 riding playing during every rep. In general, we want the clearing team to be primarily defenders and short stick defensive midfielders, and the riders being Attack and Midfield players. The game starts with coach rolling a live ground ball in the defensive corner, which should be contested with a rider. The clearing team, must try to get the ball upfield to score in 20 seconds once they gain possession.  This drill we want to focus on our riding and clearing principles. if the riding team intercepts or forces a turnover, they can try to score.

Coaching Points and Principles

Progressions

  • Make 5v4 or 6v5
  • Set up specific clearing spots wether you play ladder or stack type clear
  • Shorten shot clock to 15 seconds to make it more challenging
  • Instead of a Goal for the clearing team, create gates using cones they must clear the ball through

43 Clear Preview
  • Clearing Team We have a player advantage, spread out and find open space Find good passes and passing lanes, don’t force tough passes Stay moving, don’t stand still off ball

  • Riding Team We are player down, we want to pressure ball and play a backside zone type Dont try and take ball away, square up, turn players back from running upfield, and try to force bad passes HUSTLE! This is a conditioning type drill

Continuous 3v3 Game - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

A small sided game that that works on 2-player and 3-player game principles

Set Up

On one end of the field, split the players into 2 teams. They all start at the top of the restraining box, and the teams/groups waiting will alternate by color. Team 1 starts on defense and tam 2 starts on offense, play live 3v3. Play until there is a missed shot, save, goal, or turnover, and the play ends. Team 2 who was just on offense, stays on the field to play defense, and 3 new players from team 1 start up top on offense. Keep playing and alternating every rep

Coaching Points and Principles

Progressions

  • Play 2v2 or 4v4
  • Add in constraints, example you must trigger the offense using a pick

  • We are working on 2-3 player games, use picks and slips offensively to create coring opportunities
  • Defensively communicate through the picks, and play solid 1v1 defense on your opponent
4v4 + X - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

A great unsettled small area game designed by Jim Mitchell of Princeton Lacrosse

Set Up

Play 4v4 above GLE, and add a player at X on offense. The X player can only transfer the ball, they cannot dodge or shoot, but the defense must play them when they receive the ball. That will create an unsettle situation above GLE as the players move the ball through X

Coaching Point and Principles

4v4 + X Preview
  • Offense – Get them to dominos and find the advantage. Work the 2-3 player game above GLE
  • Defense – Communicate, protect the house, and slide/recover efficiently.

To make a drill harder, you might: Shrink the field or add boundaries, add defenders or touch restrictions (e.g., “one-pass before shooting”), or Limit time or space to force faster decisions

Small adjustments to field size, player numbers, and rules can significantly change the challenge level while maintaining the same core learning goal.
