Off Ball Offense & Defense

Please Note:The practice is designed to bring value across multiple age levels. You can use this as a foundation to build and develop your own practice. With that being said, we highly encourage you to adjust the drills based on your team’s age and skill levels. Lacrosse Drive should always be used as a starting point — you can make drills easier or harder by changing the constraints.

To make a drill easier, you might Increase the playing area, reduce the number of defenders or rules, add time or space to make decisions

3v2 Keepaway with Ghost Cuts - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

A fun passing drill to work on stick movement, spacing, and O/D Principle

Set Up

Create an 8×8 box using cones. Put 3 offensive players on the perimeter and 2 defenders in the middle. The offense is to play keep away. The offense must make a backdoor cut after every pass, cutting to open space. The defense must always pressure the ball and constantly sliding and recovering

Coaching Points & Principles

Progressions

  • Make the box smaller and harder, or bigger  and easier depending on skillset
  • Play 4v3 or 5v4
3v2 Ghost Cuts Preview
  • Offense – Moving with and without the ball, passing, and maintaining good spacing
  • Defense – Pressuring the Ball, sliding/recovery
Offensive Station: Backdoor Cuts - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

A great drill to work on offensive players escaping an off ball face guard

Set Up

Put a line on the low wing and up top. The line up top has balls, and the off ball teammate will v-cut and then backdoor the defender getting an inside shot

Coaching Points & Principles

Backdoor Shooting (bc) Preview
  • Create space with a hard cut and drive to the free area
  • Passers should lead their teammates
  • Cutters should keep their stick up and try to get a quick release inside finish
Defensive station: String Drill - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

String Defense is a defensive movement drill for developing through advanced players that teaches on-ball pressure, off-ball positioning, anticipation, and recovery while keeping defenders connected as the ball moves.

SET UP

Set up two offensive players, two defenders, and cones marking the defenders’ recovery spots. As the ball moves between offensive players, the defenders move together like they are connected by a string—the on-ball defender closes space and applies pressure while the off-ball defender recovers to their cone, gets big, and anticipates the next pass. Continue moving the ball back and forth to create repeated approaches and recoveries.

COACHING POINTS & PRINCIPLES

String Defense Drill Preview
  • Move on the Pass: Anticipate ball movement and begin recovering or closing space as the pass travels rather than waiting for the catch.
  • Stay Low & Close Space: Maintain a low defensive stance and shuffle through the approach, taking away space without rising up or slowing down.
  • Pressure Creates Mistakes: On-ball, make the ball carrier uncomfortable and look to create a bad pass or take a check when the stick is exposed.
Arc 33 Game - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

SET UP

Set up in front of the cage an arc using cones, that is about 10 yards away from the goal. Start in a 3v3, but you can build up to 6v6. The rules of the game are as followed

  1. The offense can only score inside the arc OR
  2. Outside the arc in any fashion
  3. Play for 15 seconds reps
  4. Flip teams after every rep, keep score

PRINCIPLES & COACHING POINTS

PROGRESSIONS

  • Add in Constraints/rules like must pick off or on ball
  • Build up to 4v4, 5v5 – Makes it harder for offense as it’s more crowded inside.
33arcnew Preview
  • Encourages off ball play, to get open inside the arc.. use backdoor cuts, picks, etc..
  • Defense must communicate through off ball ball play to protect the HOUSE
  • Use point system to encourage certain typer of goals (2 points inside the arc / 1 Outside)
Zone Build Up Drill w/ Mike Faith (Franklin & Marshall Women’s Lacrosse) - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

A great build up drill to work on small area offense and defense

Set Up

Put 3 offense lines in a triangle with 1 up top, and 2 at GLE. Flip the defense so 1 at X and 2 on the high wings. The drill starts with a 1v1 from up top, play till dead ball, those 2 players step out. There is now a 2v2 from X, play till end, then add the original 1v1 back in for a 3v3

To make a drill easier, you might Increase the playing area, reduce the number of defenders or rules, add time or space to make decisions

To make a drill harder, you might: Shrink the field or add boundaries, add defenders or touch restrictions (e.g., “one-pass before shooting”), or Limit time or space to force faster decisions

Small adjustments to field size, player numbers, and rules can significantly change the challenge level while maintaining the same core learning goal.
