Passing & Ball Control

Please Note:

The practice is designed to bring value across multiple age levels. You can use this as a foundation to build and develop your own practice. With that being said, we highly encourage you to adjust the drills based on your team’s age and skill levels. Lacrosse Drive should always be used as a starting point — you can make drills easier or harder by changing the constraints.

To make a drill easier, you might Increase the playing area, reduce the number of defenders or rules, add time or space to make decisions

To make a drill harder, you might: Shrink the field or add boundaries, add defenders or touch restrictions (e.g., “one-pass before shooting”), or Limit time or space to force faster decisions

Small adjustments to field size, player numbers, and rules can significantly change the challenge level while maintaining the same core learning goal.

Theme Description & Objected: Passing & Ball Control

This session challenges players to control the rhythm of the game

The emphasis is on efficiency with the ball, valuing every touch, keeping spacing clean, and ensuring tempo is player-driven rather than opponent-controlled. Every drill connects back to composure, timing, and precision within a fast, fluid style of play. By the end of this session, players will:

  • Develop greater control of game tempo, knowing when to accelerate or settle into possession.
  • Execute high-speed offense with clean stickwork and minimal turnovers.
  • Improve ability to retain and move the ball under defensive pressure.
  • Communicate effectively to maintain team rhythm and collective flow

Activity 1: Sideline Groundballs

Ground Balls To Sideline Preview

Set Up

Put your players in lines, in groups of 4-6 players, about 5-8 yards away from the sideline. The second player will roll the ball lightly to the sideline, and the first player in line must go get the groundball and gain possession without stepping out of bounds. Once controlled they will pass the ball to the second player in line and repeat for 5-8 minutes,

Coaching Points & Principles

  • Control your body, as you accelerate through, you need to change direction so you stay in bounds
  • If the ball is about to roll out of bounds, use your stick to stop it, and then scoop and go

Progressions

  • Make it 1v1 so there is an opponent behind the player trying to get the ball

Activity 2: 3v2 Keepaway

A high volume shooting drill that emphasizes recognition and finishing

Set Up

Put 3 Offensive Players behind the cage and 2 defensive lines up top. Coach will start the drill by throwing the ball into an offensive player. The defense will get into the lower crease area and play a zone like defense . The offense will spread out and move the ball fast to try and find the open teammate for a quick shot!

Coaching Points & Principles

  • Defense – Stay above Goal line extended, but need to have 1 player prevent the ball carrier from going around the crease, and the other be in a backside zone position to slide/move when the ball is passed
  • Offense – Stay spread out, find space,  and move the ball quickly to get an optimal shot!

Progressions

  • A defender can challenge the ball behind the cage

Activity 3: Unsettled GO Game

Unsettled Go Game Preview

A small area game to work on finding advantages

Set Up

Set up two lines of each team color on both wings. A live ground ball is rolled into the middle, and the team that wins possession immediately goes on offense in a 4v4 scenario. The emphasis is on competing hard for the ground ball, then pushing quickly to goal. If the defense slows down the break, players should shift to core principles—movement off-ball, creating space, and playing together on both sides of the ball.

Coaching Points & Principles

  • Ground Ball Battles! Accelerate through
  • 4v4 spacing and movement
  • Communications

Progressions

  • Play 2v2 to 3v2 for more spacing

Activity 4: Build Down Game

Girls Build Down Game Preview

A fun game that works on transition play and finding the advantages

Set Up

Create a small playing area, and split group into 2 teams. Start with a 4v4, and play until a dead ball (Goal, Save, Turnover). The last offensive player to touch the ball, leaves the game. The defending team now goes on offense playing 4v3 to the other goal. Same rules apply, last offensive player to touch, leaves game. Continuing playing with these rules until you get to 1v0 against the goalie. Restart a new game, and give the other team the start so they play with uneven advantages.

Coaching Points & Principles

  • Transition Play – Playing fast
  • Finding the advantages
  • Defense organization – unsettled, all even
