Behind GLE Closeouts

Set Up

Put a line of defenders on GLE, and place 2 cones about 8 yards away on each side. This drill has 3 progressions, and the emphasis is making sure we are approaching under control with good angles

  1. Progression 1:  We want to make sure the player behind the cage stays away from the front of the goal, so we are using a little c-curl and approaching at an angle where we could keep the offensive player behind the cage
  2. Progression 2: Once you finish the first approach, we want to run and drive the the offensive player back through X, and use our footwork and body positioning to maintain control
  3. Progression 3: We are imagining we have done our job is 1 & 2, but the offensive player changes direction to try and get back to the 5×5 island. We pivot and drop step, and try to get topside to a player who is attacking around the crease

Coaching Points & Principles

  • Approaches & Angles – We want to get out top foot up field to take away where we don’t want the player to get to. WE want short choppy steps under control as we approach, so we stay balanced and can change direction
  • Pivots & Drop Steps – We need to open up our hips and get our lead foot in the direction we need to go. This will allow us to maintain positioning to a player who changes direction
