Sweep Shooting with Decisions

Set Up

Put players in 2 lines up top about 8-10 yards away with a coach in between. Have balls in either line, and imitate with a pass across the field. The player receiving the ball should be flashing (cutting to the ball) and the coach/defender will either shade high or low. If they shade high, players should execute a center dive type shot/finish. If coach shads low, get over the top for a shot on the run. This is a IQ building drill, as we want players to recognize the space given quickly, and take it.

Coaching Points and Principles

  • Flash to the ball when receiving with the pass with your stick ion the proper ready position (In the box – around the ears)
  • Decision Making – see the space and take it
  • Center Dives – plant with outside foot, lead with your stick, finish under control with stick ahead of you
  • Sweeps – Get down hill as you turn the corner to finish

Progressions

  • Do from different sides/areas of the field
  • Challenge them with shot selection and targets
