Set Up
Put players in 2 lines, and have a coach in between. Roll a ball out 8-10 yards, and it’s a live groundball. Players will try to win the ground ball by running through it. If it becomes a battle, emphasis boxing out and positional work with your hips and legs. Players can use their feet/stick to move the ball to space for an easier pickup! The winning player can either carry the ball back to line or make a pass to coach. the defender should NOT stop defending until coach blows play dead.
Coaching Points and Principles
- Be the first player to the ball, accelerate through! Get low and always use 2 hands!
- If its a contested ball, use body and legs to box out, and you can use a “goose” with your stick or feet to kick the ball to space
- If you are trailing the other player, work on LIFTING the back hand/elbow to make it tough for the opponent to win the ground ball.
