8-Line Build Up is an advantage-based small-area game that develops quick offensive decision-making while challenging the defense to communicate, rotate, and disrupt while playing a player down.
SET UP
Set up eight lines inside the offensive box, keeping all play within the restraining lines. Create five offensive lines—two on each wing and one up top—and three defensive lines positioned between the wing lines and up top. The coach starts by throwing a ball to either wing, creating an immediate 2v1 that is played until a goal or dead ball. Those players remain on the field, and the coach initiates the next rep by throwing to another offensive line while the corresponding defender enters, creating a 3v2. Continue the build-up in the same fashion—4v3 → 5v4 → 6v5—with each possession played to a goal or dead ball before adding the next offensive and defensive player. Coaches can shorten the progression for a faster-paced version or play the full build-up through 6v5.
COACHING POINTS & PRINCIPLES
- Find the Advantage Quickly: Offensively, recognize where the extra player is, move the ball quickly, and attack before the defense has time to organize.
- Slow Down the Offense: The defense cannot get back to even numbers, so focus on communication, rotation, getting sticks into passing lanes, and forcing poor passes or low-quality shots.
- Play With Pace: Encourage quick decisions and ball movement as each new player enters, keeping the game unsettled rather than allowing either side to become comfortable.
