Mastering the 2 & 3 Player Game (by Brett Garber)

The 2-3 Player game is the foundation of modern offense because it helps create advantages and defensive rotations. By using picks, slips, and off-ball movement, players learn how to read the defense, create advantages, and make decisions in real time. Instead of memorizing set plays, players learn how to react to defensive pressure, whether the defense switches, goes under, hedges, or slides, and work together to create high-quality scoring opportunities. When players understand how to play out of the 2-player and 3-player game, the offense becomes harder to defend, more creative, and more efficient because it is based on spacing, timing, and decision-making rather than just

Players must understand these core principles before setting picks:

  • Spacing

    • We want to be spaced properly so a 3rd defender cannot quickly double team us. Executing from X or the wings, will get you the best starting space. You can get this set up using various spacing sets (first number is behind the goal)

    • 1-4-1 (wing)
    • 2-2-2  (wings or X)
    • 1-3-2 (wings)
    • 2-3-1 (X)
  • Picker Rules

    • Always Arrive Alone (AAA). We want to be deceptive with our picks, so making v-cuts before setting the picks, will help slow down the arriving defender while creating a little uncertainty on the defensive Communication side.

    • Proper Approach Angle:  Our backs should be facing the direction we want our teammate to go. If we are on the wing, and my back is facing the midline, my teammate will have to run too far north before getting back down hill (see image diagram).

    • The Roll Off – After we set the pick, we ALWAYS open up to our teammate. Your eyes should be following them, so you can read the defense. If you Turn your back and head, you lose sight of any quick decision your teammate will need to make

  • Stand Still & Shoulder to Shoulder

    • Picker must have No Movement- BE a Statue, a moving pick will lead to an unforced turnover
    • A well executed pick, the offensive teammate should be rubbing shoulders. Too big of a gap makes It easy for a defender to get through or switch

  • Coverage Solutions

    • The defense can do various coverages, that include trying to get through and stay with matchup, switch matchups, or double team the ball carrier.

    • If they want to Stay: We need to STICK the Pick
    • If they Switch: We Want to SLIP the Pick
      • When we slip, players need sure to Slip to SPACE. If they slip into a part of the field where another defender is already there to help, it makes it very hard to connect.
    • If they Jump/Double Team: We need to roll away as the ball carrier and picker should Flare Out to Support. Other adjacent teammates on field should also fear for support
  • Dodger Rules

    • Set up your Defender – Carry/drift with the ball into the location you want to start. You can manipulate the defense by getting them out of position simply by pulling them into a direction where you want to re-attack from
    • Play Fast & Get Topside –  If you see your defender taking a low angle, and you get a step (especially on a sticked pick), Dodge HARD and Attack the topside Dodgers should be attacking with with a purpose, the faster we go, the harder it is on the defense.

    • Read The Cheat – If the defender and off ball pick defender are cheating up field to take away topside, sell the dodge but then REJECT the pick and go Under. Change directions quick and accelerate protecting your stick
  • Eyes Up (decision making)

    • This a general rule of thumb for any dodger. If you dodge with your head down, you become a 1 dimensional player. Eyes up allows you to read the field, and see teammates that get open due to the defense reacting to you as a dodger

If these aren’t in place, picks don’t work.

👇 Below are some of our favorite drills and ideas to help build your 2 and 3 player game skillset

Please Note for YOUTH Coaches: As a coach who has worked with all ages and skill levels, I typically begin teaching these principles around age 1o or 11, and sometimes closer to 12 depending on the skill level of the group. At the younger ages, rather than teaching players to set picks, we focus on shallow cuts that mirror and prepare players for the pick game. We strongly encourage coaches to adjust the drills shown based on their team’s age and skill level. Lacrosse Drive should always be used as a starting point — drills can be made easier or more challenging by adjusting the constraints.

Reading Coverages - High Volume Reps

This is a great drill to work on high volume reps, reinforcing reading the defense coverages.

Put your players in groups of 4, and in open space on the field. This works great as you can get every player involved on the field, no line or waiting!

Have the offense run 5 reps of picks, and the defense will execute 1-3 coverages. The offense must read and try to find a solution to connect on the pass. The defense doesn’t tell the offense, but they must do a different coverage every reps

Once completed, flip and let the other group go. Do this for 8 minutes, and your players will have a lot of reps working on just coverage solutions

2

Conceptual Team Passing Drill

If you want to get a Skelton passing drill that works on 2 player principles, this is a great drill. You can manipulate from any set you work in, but the key principles are:

  • There is no firm framework, players are passing freely, moving, and getting into space to set up the next pick
  • Move the ball quickly – Player should move the ball fast, keeping the movement up tempo

In this particular set, the players are playing in a 1-4-1 that will morph into a 1-3-2, which is important to know as they more you can adjust the spacing, it makes it harder for the defense to cover in live action

3

Womens Small Area Game

This is a great game on the girls side, to work on those pick and slips. Players will be challenged to need to make decisions based on:

  • Pressure
  • Coverages
  • Moving off ball to support in space

This womens version can be easily adjusted for the mens game as well!

4

Mens Small Area Game

This is a great drill to play with advantages and worked the 3 player game. The offense has a 3v2 advantage, which will re-inforce spacing and making it a little easier to find solutions in tight spaces. Key points for this drill include:

  • Spacing – Can’t over crowd, we have the ball carrier, the picker, and the floater
  • Look for nations looks – After the pick and roll, if we pass to the floater, Look for a give and go with the player who made the initial pick

Rep these out, and add in a 3rd defender to make 3v3 to make it more challenging for the offense

5

2-Player Game Shooting Drill

For this drill, it’s just a. great way to get high volume reps. We want to reinforce the following:

  • Making that V-Cut before setting the pick
  • Taking a good approach angle
  • Opening UP to our teammate
  • Catching the ball loaded for a quick release shot

Players should be getting a lot of shooting and passing reps from this drill

6

3-Player Game Shooting Drill

The nations look is when we make some sort of give and go pass to one the pick players. When the ball carrier comes off the pick, they can move the ball to another adjacent teammate, and then we find that pass to the picker. This drill manipulates that look, in a way that gets high volume shots and working on those quick skips

  • Eyes up
  • Firm Passing
  • Quick Release shooting
  • Timing

7

Quick Transition 2-Player Game

We use this game to work on playing the 2 and 3 player game out of transition situation. Ofter times in transition we have advantages because of subbing and clearing success. We can still play fast and work those 2 player games as we get in the offense end. We want to focus on:

  • Compete! Great game to keep score and compete
  • Game IQ
  • Offensively – playing in small spaces & implementing the 2 man game.
  • Defense – Play with pressure, communicate
  • Toughness! this drill will be highly competitive and players must be able to play fast and tough

8

Our Favorite Youth Drill

A key point at the youth level, is competing in small area games. this will keep the kids engaged and allow for many reps that all vary, which will help develop that game IQ

This game will keep the kids playing fast, and coaches can talk about adding in the pairs player game. As mentioned earlier, if you DONT want your players setting picks, just have them execute shallow cuts and you can still play with the same 2 player principles noted above!

9

Passing Drill with Nations Looks

This drill is one you can do at the start of practice to get the offense and defense warmed up. A great passing drill to reinforce:

  • Constant motion – the offense should be moving and setting picks making it hard for the defense to cover
  • Moving to Space – Off ball teammates would be moving to support to try and execute
  • If the nations look isn’t there, have them start with a pass and pick all over again
  • Defense need to slide and recover, making sure we have coverage one the nation look
