Summary

Make It, Take It is a fast-paced small-area game for all age levels that rewards smart offensive possessions and puts pressure on the defense to earn stops to get the ball back.

SET UP

Create a small playing area between two goals, using the restraining box or smaller fields within a half field. The game can be played 2v2, 3v3, 4v4, or 5v5 depending on your numbers and age group. If the offensive team scores, they stay on offense, receive a new ball from the goalie, and immediately attack the opposite goal against a fresh group of defenders. The scoring team continues playing offense for as long as they keep scoring. If the offense loses possession—through a save, missed shot, turnover, or ball out of bounds—they transition to defense and the opposing team takes possession and attacks the opposite direction. Score and you keep it; lose it and you have to earn it back.

COACHING POINTS & PRINCIPLES

  • Value Possessions: The offense is rewarded for taking smart shots, protecting the ball, and creating quality opportunities because scoring allows them to stay on offense.
  • Earn the Ball Back: Defenders can’t simply wait for the next possession—they must communicate, compete, and get a stop to become the offensive team.
  • Play Fast & Transition: Keep the game moving quickly between goals to force players to recognize changing roles, react immediately, and compete in a dynamic environment.
