Offense & Defense System Install

Week 1 Practice  / 90 Minute Session

Please Note:The practice is designed to bring value across multiple age and skill levels at the high school & collegiate levels. You can use this as a foundation to build and develop your own practice. With that being said, we highly encourage you to adjust the drills based on your team’s age and skill levels. Lacrosse Drive should always be used as a starting point — you can make drills easier or harder by changing the constraints.

A team set that allows more alley dodging

Note: For any team set, we suggest to use for spacing. We always want our players to be able to read and play off another, finding and exploiting space. If we become to predictable with set motions, defense will counter quickly. Lacrosse Drive concepts are designed to be a starting point and concept ideas. Coaches should modify to their players age and skill level to what they see fit for their players

Set Up

Place 2 attack players behind the cage, and 1 on the crease. Add 2 midfielder on the high wings and 1 on the crease. The midfield and attack should think about their triangle for spacing principles. More likely than not, the offense will be attacking the alleys in this set due to how we are stretching the defense and the middle of the field being full

Defending a 2-2-2 In lacrosse

Details

Against a 2–2–2, protecting the house is about staying balanced and connected while the offense tries to create space through pairs and two-man actions. We maintain our core structure: a strong on-ball defender applying pressure, two adjacent defenders in tight support ready to show help, and the crease defender as the primary slide, responsible for stopping any dodge that threatens the middle. The two backside defenders stay loaded inside the house, forming that second layer, reading the play, ready to “slide the slide,” and taking away skip lanes or quick crease looks. Because the 2–2–2 naturally sets up picks and off-ball exchanges, communication and discipline are critical—defenders must call out actions early, stay physical through picks, and avoid getting pulled too far outside. The goal is to keep everything in front, protect the middle at all costs, and force the offense into low-percentage shots from the perimeter while always being in position to recover.

A full field passing/clearing drill to work on stick work and playing against light pressure’

Set Up

There will be 6 lines on the field, 2 in each defensive corner and 1 at each side of the midfield line. We will add in pressure players (defenders), in between each line on both sides. The drill starts with a goalie outlet to a low defender, and the team must comply passes up the latter, to the opposite goalie. The riding players will put pressure on the ball and try to intercept or knockdown passes in transition.

Coaching Points and Principles

  • Add in 2 more lines (8 total) to change the clearing strategy

  • You must move your feet with the ball, trying to create passing lanes both with and without the ball
  • Try to move the ball fast
  • Riding players, keep your stick up, stay in between the ball carrier and the next teammates, we don’t want to chase sticks or get beat

At the High School and Collegiate levels, systems should live within the principles. Sets and formations provide structure and spacing, while the underlying principles ensure the team stays balanced, connected, and able to play together as one unit.

*If you don’t have the time for pre-practice, you can incorporate those skill session into practice

To make a drill easier, you might Increase the playing area, reduce the number of defenders or rules, add time or space to make decisions

To make a drill harder, you might: Shrink the field or add boundaries, add defenders or touch restrictions (e.g., “Play A gets 2 points for an assist”), or Limit time or space to force faster decisions

Small adjustments to field size, player numbers, and rules can significantly change the challenge level while maintaining the same core learning goal.

6v6 Scrimmage

Play out of a 2-2-2

6v6 Live Preview

A live 6v6 scrimmage allows players to apply the skills and concepts practiced throughout the session in a game-like environment. Play continuously while encouraging communication, decision-making, and teamwork. Keep coaching interruptions to a minimum, using brief teaching moments between possessions to maintain the flow and maximize repetitions.

Constraint Ideas: Possession clock • Every player touches the ball • Assisted goals only • Bonus points for defensive stops or caused turnovers • Start from specific situations (clear, ground ball, man-up, etc.) • Limit dodges or require a dodge before shooting • Reward good spacing and ball movement • Play uneven numbers (6v5, 5v6).
