Spoke Passing w/ Groundballs & Pressure - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

A fun variation and take off this classic passing drills

Set Up

Put your players In groups of 8 or 10, and set up 4 lines all right next to each other, in the shape of a + sign. The first players in each line are on offense, and the second are defenders/trailers. Start with 1 ball in 1 line, with a live ground ball. the first player in line must top attack and get the ball, with the 2nd player defending as the trailer. The defender will shade one side, and the offense must roll to space and adjacent line teammate must pop out to support. Connect a pass to the outside so the trail defenders can intercept the pass, and continue until you get all the way around the circle. Reset and start a ground ball with a new line

Coaching Points & Principles

Spoke Passing W/ Gb And Pressure Preview
  • Groundballs – Accelerate and get your head up
  • Escapes – Feeling the open Space
  • Off Ball Play – Adjacent teammates must recognize if their teammate curls to them and pop out for support

Read The Movement of the Defense 4v4 - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

A great game to build team offense and defense IQ!

Set Up

Put player on field in a 4v4. The offense will start with their backs turned to coach, and coach will tell which defender is the slide/help. Offense can turn back and get set, on whistle, the defender guarding the ball leaves the field and the directed help player slides to the ball. The offense must read where the slides are coming from and move the ball to find the best shot. The defense must slide, rotate, and recover to try and get the offense back to neutral by the time their 4th player gets back into play!

Coaching Points & Principles

Progressions

  • Play 3v3 with the youngest players
  • Build to 5v5 and 6v6 for youth, high school, and college levels

Read The Defense Preview
  • Offense – read the slides, move the ball to pressure
  • Defense – Slide, Recover, Communicate
4v3 Unsettled Game - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

A fun small sided game that will get the players competing and working through finding advantages!

Set Up

Create a small plating area, inside the restraining box. Add 2 goals so you have a full field within the playing area. Split you group into 2 teams, and put each team in a single file line at their respected defensive end. Start the game by putting 4 offense and 3 defense in, giving a team a starting advantage. Play until a dead ball, the last player to touch the ball on the offense is out. The 3 defensive players stay in and transition to the offensive end with a new teammate joining. They will go play 4v3 on the opposite end, until a dead. Continue this for about 8-10 minutes and your players will get a lot of touches and gameplay!

Coaching Points and Principles

Progressions

  • Play full field with older players (HS/College) for a more intense workout
  • Give a shot clock, for faster play

4v3 Unsettled Preview
  • Offense – Fine the advantage (2v1). We want players to start seeking their open teammates in these transition scenarios so we get the best shot possible
  • Defense – Communicate, get into a zone type shape where you can play the ball and slide for help. Keep your sticks up in passing lanes making it hard for the offense to make easy passes!

Phase 1: Recognize & Execute – Players will Sharpen their skills within game context and improve execution under moderate pressure. Players should now have a functional skill base. The focus shifts from just “can you do it?” to “can you do it at the right time and make the right decisions?”

Week 2 Practice  / 75 Minute Session

Please Note:The practice is designed to bring value across multiple age levels. You can use this as a foundation to build and develop your own practice. With that being said, we highly encourage you to adjust the drills based on your team’s age and skill levels. Lacrosse Drive should always be used as a starting point — you can make drills easier or harder by changing the constraints.

To make a drill easier, you might Increase the playing area, reduce the number of defenders or rules, add time or space to make decisions

To make a drill harder, you might: Shrink the field or add boundaries, add defenders or touch restrictions (e.g., “one-pass before shooting”), or Limit time or space to force faster decisions

Small adjustments to field size, player numbers, and rules can significantly change the challenge level while maintaining the same core learning goal.

Theme Description
