Stickskills & Playing X

Phase 2: Create & Manipulate: As players transition into the Early Train to Compete phase, the focus shifts from executing skills to intentionally creating advantages. Players learn how to manipulate defenders through two-man actions, off-ball movement, proper spacing, and early ball movement while developing the ability to play through second and third actions. Defensively, the emphasis is on communication, help principles, and recognizing how to disrupt offensive advantages. Coaches encourage players to read the game rather than memorize patterns, using competitive, game-like environments that develop intelligent, adaptable decision-makers.

Partner Passing – Backward - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

Am engaging drill to work on players passing and catching skillsets

Set Up

Put players in lines, about 5-8 yards away. They will run backward while passing the ball back and forth. Players must keep their stick in the outside hand, so one line is catching/throwing righty while the other executes left. Have them run the width of the field as 1 rep. Complete again so players can work on their opposite hands

Coaching Points & Principles

  • Keep your stick up as a target for your teammate when you don’t have the ball
  • Stay balanced, running backwards forces players to slow down a little bit and thinking about catching and throwing properly
  • Passing – Make good passes keep the ball in the air so your teammate can make an easy catch
2v0 Ground Ball w/ Give and Go - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

An easy drill to do with all ages, to work on ground balls, passing, and off ball movement

Set up

2 line of players about 8-10 yards apart. Star a ball in 1 line, the play will roll a diagonal ball to teammate about 10 yards out. Once the roll the ball, they mirror their teammate as they go to scoop it. Once possession happens, a quick pass back over to the teammate mirroring. Lastly, players who made pass, will cut back to middle for a give and go pass, and then restart the ball in line with 2 new players

Coaching Point & Principles

  • Ground Balls – Scoop through, no raking
  • Eyes up and quick passing!

  • Passing and Catching on the run
Offensive Skill Session: Up the Hash - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

A great drill to work on decision making and reinforcing game IQ when dodging around the goal

Set Up

Put a line of players on the Goal Line Extended with balls. 1 Player will be on offense, the other on defense. The player with the ball, will carry it to the “island” or 5×5 with a defender playing light pressure. As they are dodging, the defender will offer 1 of 3 affordances, and the offensive player must react. The offense should NOT know what the defender will do, making it more challenging game IQ wise.

  1. Shade behind or be on the players back – We want the offensive player to get top side for a shot
  2. Shade ahead, be on the front chest of the player – Inside roll or question mark dodge
  3. If the Defender stays neutral, we want the offensive player to BOUNCE, and the read/take the space a re-dodge

Coaching Points and Principles

Progressions

  • Add in different types of finished around the cage
  • Do on different parts of the field

Up The Hash Decision Preview
  • Have your head/eyes up while dodging
  • Control the stick, protect the ball
  • Read the defender – should be playing light, guided defense
Defensive SKill Session: Double Pipe Drill - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

A drill to work on playing defense from X and around the goal

Set Up

Take the stick away from the defender, and have an offensive player drive to 1 side of the cage. We want the defense to not let the player get top side or underneath, so they will make contact about 1 yard away from goal line extended, and drive the player out. The offensive player will run to the opposite side, try to get topside, and the defender will execute the same positioning.

Coaching Points & Principles

  • Make contact about 1 yard from GLE, not allowing an inside roll so you can drive out
  • Play with your feet, no stick makes you stay in positon
  • Chasing a player through X, you want to be a step behind them, so you can trail properly. If you get too far in front, they can change direction and beat you to the goal
Attack 3v3 w/ Transfers - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

A live 3v3 game that emphasizes finding scoring opportunities 2-3 passes away from initial dodge

Set Up

Put 3 offensive attackers and 3 defensive long poles on the playing field. Add in 2 transfer midfield players around up by top of restraining box. The game starts with a live 3v3, if a players dodges up the hash, for example, and they don’t have an outlet, they can move the ball to a transfer player, who can then look for backside scoring opportunities amongst the other attackers.

Coaching Points and Principles

Progressions

  • Add in token defenders with the midfielder, making passes a little harder
  • put 4v4 in the midfield area

Attack 3v3 + 1 Preview
  • Work out of your team sets/spacing with the attack offensively. We want players to see how we use dodging to create offenses by getting the defense to slide
  • Defense can slide, double teams, and need to protect the crease using their “house” principles. Defense should focus on keeping players away from the middle of the field
6v6 Scrimmage - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

A live 6v6 scrimmage allows players to apply the skills and concepts practiced throughout the session in a game-like environment. Play continuously while encouraging communication, decision-making, and teamwork. Keep coaching interruptions to a minimum, using brief teaching moments between possessions to maintain the flow and maximize repetitions.

Constraint Ideas: Possession clock • Every player touches the ball • Assisted goals only • Bonus points for defensive stops or caused turnovers • Start from specific situations (clear, ground ball, man-up, etc.) • Limit dodges or require a dodge before shooting • Reward good spacing and ball movement • Play uneven numbers (6v5, 5v6).

Week 5 Practice  / 90 Minute Session

Please Note:The practice is designed to bring value across multiple age levels. You can use this as a foundation to build and develop your own practice. With that being said, we highly encourage you to adjust the drills based on your team’s age and skill levels. Lacrosse Drive should always be used as a starting point — you can make drills easier or harder by changing the constraints.

To make a drill easier, you might Increase the playing area, reduce the number of defenders or rules, add time or space to make decisions

To make a drill harder, you might: Shrink the field or add boundaries, add defenders or touch restrictions (e.g., “one-pass before shooting”), or Limit time or space to force faster decisions

Small adjustments to field size, player numbers, and rules can significantly change the challenge level while maintaining the same core learning goal.
