Tempo & Transtion

Phase 2: Create & Manipulate: As players transition into the Early Train to Compete phase, the focus shifts from executing skills to intentionally creating advantages. Players learn how to manipulate defenders through two-man actions, off-ball movement, proper spacing, and early ball movement while developing the ability to play through second and third actions. Defensively, the emphasis is on communication, help principles, and recognizing how to disrupt offensive advantages. Coaches encourage players to read the game rather than memorize patterns, using competitive, game-like environments that develop intelligent, adaptable decision-makers.

Week 5 Practice  / 90 Minute Session

  3. 54 Drill
  4. 3-Quarter Field Scramble
  5. 6v6 Scrimmage
Partner Passing – Inside Out - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

A good drill to build on partner passing that included a hand exchange

Set Up

Put players in lines, about 5-8 yards away. They will run while passing the ball back and forth keeping their hips upfield, it’s not a shuffle. Players will catch with their inside hand, exchange to their outside hand to make the pass. One line is catching R and Throwing L, and the other is doing the opposite. Have them run the width of the field as 1 rep. Complete again so players can work on their opposite hands

Coaching Points & Principles

  • Keep your stick up as a target for your teammate when you don’t have the ball
  • Try to keep the stick in tight during your hand exchange for a quicker release
  • Passing – Make good passes keep the ball in the air so your teammate can make an easy catch
Tight 2v2 to the Goal - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

A small area game that works on ground battles, and quick transition play around the goal!

Set Up

Put the group into 2 teams are the restraining box, alternating lines so you start in a 2v2 scenario. Coach rolls a ball in, the winning team is on offense and must go to the goal quick! Use a shot clock to speed up play

Coaching Points & Principles

Tight 2v2 Preview

  • Play quick in tight space
  • Offense focus on spacing and 2-player game
  • Defense work on physical on ball play!
54 Drill - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

his transition drill will keep practice uptempo with constant unsettled 5 on 4’s. This is a great drill to use in the middle of practice as a warm up before an inter squad scrimmage.

SET UP

Put all the balls in both cages with the goalies. Put 3 Attack and 3 Defense on each offensive end. Split the midfielders up in half, and put 1 lines of each color on the box side of play. The play starts with a 5v4 scenario on end. Once there is a missed shot, save, or turnover, The goalie will put a new ball in play to go the other way. The goalie must outlet to a player in current field of play (not the new midfielder waiting). Send in one of the midfielders on defense, in to the hole, and play 5 on 4 until there is a goal, save, or turnover. Once the clearing team gets passed half field, the rinding midfielders are OUT.

PRINCIPLES & COACHING POINTS

PROGRESSIONS

– Send Opposite side midfielder in on defense

  • Play fast!
  • Get the ball down the alley and through X
  • Find the 2v1
  • Defense communicate and get into a diamond set
3-Quarter Field Scramble - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

SET UP

Put 4 attack and 4 defenders down on one side of the field in front of the cage. At the far restraining box, set up , add 3 lines of each color alternating by color. (we have the attack and defense in different colors because their positions never change) Each line has a number, to start the drill, coach gives the numbers going in and coach passes a ball in. The team that gets it is on offense and they must push the ball in transition while the defense has to communicate at talk through the situation. If the goalie saves it or there is a turnover/missed shot, have them clear it back to starting point. If the offense scores, kill the play and restart with a new group

PRINCIPLES & COACHING POINTS

PROGRESSIONS

  • Tell Defense to play different types of D
  • Add in contraints, like goals need to finish off a pass
  • Keep the offense and defense separate up top, if you have specific transition players
Quarter Scramble Preview
  • Have coach change up numbers (5v4, 6v5, 6v6)
  • Encourage to try and find solutions for quick scoring options (Shot clock)
  • Discuss slow breaks when occurs, and encourage moving the ball through X
6v6 Scrimmage - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

A live 6v6 scrimmage allows players to apply the skills and concepts practiced throughout the session in a game-like environment. Play continuously while encouraging communication, decision-making, and teamwork. Keep coaching interruptions to a minimum, using brief teaching moments between possessions to maintain the flow and maximize repetitions.

Constraint Ideas: Possession clock • Every player touches the ball • Assisted goals only • Bonus points for defensive stops or caused turnovers • Start from specific situations (clear, ground ball, man-up, etc.) • Limit dodges or require a dodge before shooting • Reward good spacing and ball movement • Play uneven numbers (6v5, 5v6).

Week 5 Practice  / 90 Minute Session

Please Note:The practice is designed to bring value across multiple age levels. You can use this as a foundation to build and develop your own practice. With that being said, we highly encourage you to adjust the drills based on your team’s age and skill levels. Lacrosse Drive should always be used as a starting point — you can make drills easier or harder by changing the constraints.

To make a drill easier, you might Increase the playing area, reduce the number of defenders or rules, add time or space to make decisions

To make a drill harder, you might: Shrink the field or add boundaries, add defenders or touch restrictions (e.g., “one-pass before shooting”), or Limit time or space to force faster decisions

Small adjustments to field size, player numbers, and rules can significantly change the challenge level while maintaining the same core learning goal.
