Transition & Tempo

Please Note:The practice is designed to bring value across multiple age and skill levels at the high school & collegiate levels. You can use this as a foundation to build and develop your own practice. With that being said, we highly encourage you to adjust the drills based on your team’s age and skill levels. Lacrosse Drive should always be used as a starting point — you can make drills easier or harder by changing the constraints.

At the High School and Collegiate levels, systems should live within the principles. Sets and formations provide structure and spacing, while the underlying principles ensure the team stays balanced, connected, and able to play together as one unit.

Pre-Practice - Offense - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

A great shooting drill to emphasize Attacking right off the pass and getting down hill with our shot on the run

Set Up

Put 2 lines on the high wigs with balls, and a cone in the top center between the two. Add in 2 more cones down each alley, with the second cone being more inside and HIGHER. When they get to the first cone, players will roll back, get slightly upfield and shoot around that second cone!

Coaching Points & Principles

progressions

  • Shoot on the Run

  • We want the catch and attack quickly when e change sides of the field
  • Roll Backs – Protect your stick, keep it to the outside. We want to step slightly upfield for body separating
  • Get BACK Down hill around second cone
  • Play fast!
Pre-Practice: Defense - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

A great skill drill to work with your defensive players on stick control and footwork

Set Up

Put Cones in a square pattern about 5 years apart. The defensive player starts at the top cone looking back at their teammates. They will drop step and side run in a zig zag pattern through the cones with emphasis on keeping their stick up in the middle of the field. Add in a ground ball at the end

Coaching Points & Principles

Progressions

  • Make the distance between the cones wider to make it easier, or more narrow to make it tougher and a conditioning type drill

Stick In Lane Preview
  • Side runs – this is mimicking a recovery type scenario when a player is dropping into help on the crease during play
  • Stick up – VITAL for all defense when playing OFF-BALL. Sticks up allow opportunities to steal or knock down passes
Crossfire Passing - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

A great warm up passing drill to get the kids engaged and alert

Set Up

Put 4-5 lines across from each other in a small area, like the restraining box area. On on side, give everyone 1st in line a ball, and give 1 player a ball on the opposite side. If you have 5 and 5, there would be 6 balls in play. The players must all make passes to teammates across, but CANNOT throw to a player directly across or from the same line the ball came from.

Coaching Points & Principles

Crossfire Passing Preview
  • Communicate! players with and without the ball must communicate to connect with a good pass
  • Stick work – Players should be always ready to receive a pass with their stick up as a target, and make good crisp passes
  • Movement – We shouldn’t be passing standing stills, players should be slightly moving their feet to the teammate they are passing to

his transition drill will keep practice uptempo with constant unsettled 5 on 4’s. This is a great drill to use in the middle of practice as a warm up before an inter squad scrimmage.

SET UP

Put all the balls in both cages with the goalies. Put 3 Attack and 3 Defense on each offensive end. Split the midfielders up in half, and put 1 lines of each color on the box side of play. The play starts with a 5v4 scenario on end. Once there is a missed shot, save, or turnover, The goalie will put a new ball in play to go the other way. The goalie must outlet to a player in current field of play (not the new midfielder waiting). Send in one of the midfielders on defense, in to the hole, and play 5 on 4 until there is a goal, save, or turnover. Once the clearing team gets passed half field, the rinding midfielders are OUT.

*If you don’t have the time for pre-practice, you can incorporate those skill session into practice

To make a drill easier, you might Increase the playing area, reduce the number of defenders or rules, add time or space to make decisions

To make a drill harder, you might: Shrink the field or add boundaries, add defenders or touch restrictions (e.g., “Play A gets 2 points for an assist”), or Limit time or space to force faster decisions

Small adjustments to field size, player numbers, and rules can significantly change the challenge level while maintaining the same core learning goal.

*Practice 2 Notes: This practice should give you a full understanding of your personnel

Summary

The Main objective of this drill, is to get high volume reps for your team, while incorporating different style of passing.

Double Box Passing – Roll Away Preview

Set Up

Set this passing drill up anywhere around the field, in the video we are using with the box area. Put 6 cones around the outside permitter and 4 cones inside. Split players into two groups and organize them in each box. Players on the inside will work together, and the players on outside will work together. The outside like will be stepping to their teammate with the ball, receive a pass, and roll away and change hands. They will then run towards the next cone teammate. The inside line, players will pop out, catch, rollaway and change hands, and make pass to teammate. For instance, if the ball is moving clockwise, players would catch with their right hand, roll away, put stick in their left hand, and make a pass to their teammate. Do each direction for 2-3 minutes, and then switch the inside lines with outside lines.

Coaching Points & Principles

  •  Make sure players are catching with their OUTSIDE hand and switching to make the pass
  • Communication, calling for passes
  • Emphasize getting the ball out of your stick quick!

Challenges:

see how many times the players can move the ball around the perimeter in 1 minute.

6v6 Scrimmage

Have the players put all the pieces together with a straight full field scrimmage. Take notes on how they clear the ball, how players are riding, and overall team gameplay.

6v6 Live Preview

A live 6v6 scrimmage allows players to apply the skills and concepts practiced throughout the session in a game-like environment. Play continuously while encouraging communication, decision-making, and teamwork. Keep coaching interruptions to a minimum, using brief teaching moments between possessions to maintain the flow and maximize repetitions.

Constraint Ideas: Possession clock • Every player touches the ball • Assisted goals only • Bonus points for defensive stops or caused turnovers • Start from specific situations (clear, ground ball, man-up, etc.) • Limit dodges or require a dodge before shooting • Reward good spacing and ball movement • Play uneven numbers (6v5, 5v6).
