Skill Session: How to be a Deceptive Shooter

Becoming a Deceptive Outside Shooter in Lacrosse

A deceptive shooter uses small adjustments to create big advantages. One key element is release angle. By varying the angle of the stick and wrists at the moment of release, shooters can change the ball’s trajectory without changing their body position, making it harder for goalies to read the shot. Most goalies struggle the most when the ball is release high (overhand) because you can hide the track of the stick behind your head/body.  Subtle differences in release point can delay a goalie’s reaction even when the shot speed stays the same.

Changing planes adds another layer of deception. Moving the stick from high to low, or low to high, forces the goalie to adjust eye level and timing. Combined with intentional shot placement—shooting away from the goalie’s momentum rather than just shooting hard—these elements allow shooters to score using control, disguise, and precision instead of relying solely on power.
