Skill Session: Passing – Foundational Skillset Series

How to make an accurate and efficient pass in lacrosse

A strong lacrosse pass starts with correct hand placement. The bottom hand acts as the anchor, providing leverage and control, while the top hand sits about halfway up the shaft with a relaxed grip in the fingertips rather than a tight squeeze. This allows the stick to move freely and load back into a comfortable throwing position.

As the pass begins, the anchor hand pulls the stick through the motion while the top hand guides and releases the ball with a quick, clean snap of the wrist. The hands work together to create smooth acceleration and consistent accuracy.

For shorter passes, players should focus on tighter body control with minimal movement, keeping the motion compact and efficient. Longer, firmer passes require more involvement from the torso, using rotation to generate additional power while maintaining balance and control.
