Skill Session: Shooting – Turning the Corner from X

Turning the corner and finishing

Turning the corner is about changing angle while keeping the body connected to the goal. As an offensive player carries the ball around the cage, they should stay balanced and use their feet to gain separation from the defender rather than reaching with the stick. The goal is to create a shooting lane while staying tight and controlled.

As the player clears the defender’s hip, the body works back toward the goal. The hips and shoulders rotate so the chest begins to face the cage, allowing the shooter to regain a quick downhill position even while moving laterally. Keeping the stick protected and close to the body helps maintain control through contact or pressure.

To finish, the player releases the ball with a compact motion, using wrist snap and core rotation rather than stopping their feet. By getting the body back toward the goal before shooting, players improve accuracy, reduce goalie angle, and finish effectively from around the crease.
