A great drill that works on man up and man down play designer by Coach John Gallant
Set Up
create a playing area 7-10 yards up from the goal line, and have the players play a Straight 4v3 making sure 1 offensive player is in the crease (sideways diamond). The game starts with an alternate player or goalie, passing the ball into one of the 3 perimeter players. Play for 5-10 seconds, every group gets 3-5 reps.
Progression 1: Offense plays stationary trying to move the ball quickly to get an open shot on the perimeter or crease
Progression 2: Offense can move wiring the playing area using drifts, pops, or any motion to maintain spacing within playing area
The defense must work hard to cover the ball and nearest off ball threats by sliding and recovering
Coaching Points & principles
- Defense: Sliding, recovery, and communication. Try not to over extend and get too wide, we want to feel packed in, use landmarks for guidance. Approaches should be going to ball carrier stick side getting in passing lanes
- Offense: Quick ball movement, using deception to get open shots
