Space Bounces

Set Up

Put players in pairs all over the field. This allows to get a high volume workload on a foundational concept like bounces. We use a bounce to escape pressure, and then we can re-attack our opponent. The players will start engaged, and the offensive player has the ball. They will play on their own time (no whistles unless starting, finishing, or stopping to review). The player will bounce away from defender (2-3 steps), the defender will re-engage and the ball carrier will read and take the space give. Tell the defense to shake high, low, or neutral and change it every rep. Let players get 15-20 reps, then switch places. This drill is for ALL players, as defenders and goalies will see pressure in rides and a good way to learn escapes

Coaching Points and Principles

  • Bouncing away, square up, and then read the defender
  • Defender take 1 of 3 approaches to let the offensive player read and find the space
  • Defender can play light defense to try and take away ball, bit also should exaggerate a little bit the shading as this is a learning drill for the offensive player
