Defensive Base & Stick Length: Mastering Positioning and Disruption
A strong defensive stance starts with balance and readiness. Defenders should stand with feet slightly wider than shoulder-width, knees bent, hips low, and weight centered on the balls of the feet. The chest stays up, eyes forward, and hands are out in front of the body so the defender can move quickly in any direction.
The stick should be held comfortably with the anchor hand at the base & Control (top) hand about 10-12″ from bottom hand. The stick stays in front of the body, allowing the defender to play position first and use the stick as an extension of their reach, not as a crutch.
Stick length is just as important as stance. Younger or smaller players should use a stick that matches their height and strength so they can move, change direction, and maintain control. A stick that is too long makes footwork slower and balance harder to maintain, while a properly sized stick allows players to develop sound positioning, approach technique, and confidence on defense.
