Inside Finishes – 2 Ways

Set Up

Set up a triangle using cones which point is about 8-10 yards from crease. There is a line of players at the other low cone with ball, and a coach up top with balls. The drill starts with a player on lower cone flashing upfield to coach to the point. They will need to catch, and get their hips/shoulders back towards the cage. Once they shoot, they will immediately cut down for a pass to the lower pipe for an inside finish.

Coaching Points and Principles

  • When players catch ball high crease, we want to focus on getting our hips through the shot back to the goal
  • In tight finish – focus on catching and releasing fast – no big loads ups, keep stick in the box (around ears) and “Hammer the Nail” is a term we like to use, focusing on driving the top hand down for a quick hard shot

Progressions

  • Add in thought passes so players need to adjust and work on hand/eye coordination
  • Add in fakes to finishes
