Summary

This drill is a competitive small-area game for all skill levels that develops ground-ball skills, quick decision-making, and the ability to create scoring opportunities in tight spaces.

SET UP

Create an arc around the goal using cones approximately 8–10 yards from the cage. Divide players into two teams on opposite sides of the arc and play 2v2 or 3v3 inside the area. The coach rolls a ball into play, and both teams compete for possession. Whichever team wins the ground ball immediately attacks the goal. Once the play ends, the coach rolls in another ball to start a new possession. Each group plays three consecutive reps before rotating out.

COACHING POINTS & PRINCIPLES

  • Compete for Possession: Attack every ground ball with urgency, use your body to establish position, and secure possession under pressure.

  • Scoop & Recognize: Get your head up immediately after securing the ball to identify open teammates, space, and scoring opportunities.

  • Make Quick Decisions: Use fast ball movement, purposeful dodges, and good spacing to create quality scoring opportunities in tight spaces.
