Open Diamond is a simple offensive system for youth through advanced players that keeps the middle open, puts players on their strong-hand side, and uses small groups of three to create space, support dodges, and attack the middle of the field.
SET UP
Set up in an open formation with three left-handed players on the left side and three right-handed players on the right side. The three players on each side work together like a wheel. When a player dodges, the next player cuts through, while the third follows behind to provide support and maintain spacing. If the initial dodge doesn’t create a shot, move the ball, refill the open spots, and re-attack. Look to initiate dodges primarily from the wings or lower wings, where players have more space to attack the middle on their strong hand.
COACHING POINTS & PRINCIPLES
- Don’t Let 1 Guard 2: Maintain enough spacing that one defender cannot effectively cover two offensive players.
- Cut & Follow: When a teammate dodges, one player cuts through and another follows behind, keeping the middle open while maintaining backside support.
- Attack the Middle: Use ball movement and re-dodges to create opportunities for righties and lefties to attack topside toward the middle on their strong hand rather than forcing crowded dodges.
