Skill and Decision Stations

Phase 2: Play & Decide – Focus Points to build on our fundamental skillsets, while adding in some light decision making

Week 6 Practice  / 60 Minute Session

Please Note:The practice is designed to bring value across multiple age levels. You can use this as a foundation to build and develop your own practice. With that being said, we highly encourage you to adjust the drills based on your team’s age and skill levels. Lacrosse Drive should always be used as a starting point — you can make drills easier or harder by changing the constraints.

To make a drill easier, you might Increase the playing area, reduce the number of defenders or rules, add time or space to make decisions

To make a drill harder, you might: Shrink the field or add boundaries, add defenders or touch restrictions (e.g., “one-pass before shooting”), or Limit time or space to force faster decisions

Small adjustments to field size, player numbers, and rules can significantly change the challenge level while maintaining the same core learning goal.

Theme Description This practice is designed continue to build on our foundational skillsets. Players are working on stick protection and then building in small area games where they should play vs pressure and working on protecting the ball

Inside Out Chaos Passing Game

If the players seem to be struggling with passing to a teammate, you can have them run to a teammate, tag in, and have them scoop a ground ball. The defender should give a 2-3 yard buffer for restart.

Summary

Inside out chaos passing is a really fun game that works on recognition ground balls in team passing.

Set Up

Create  a small playing around area, in this video specifically we’re using the right side restraining box. Split your group up in the two teams. Each team will have three players on each end line. The rest of the players will be around the playing field, alternating dark white dark white. Coach will put 6 to 8 balls in the middle of the field, and on the whistle the players in the end line will run to try to gain possession of a ball. After a player gain possession, they will find a teammate on the perimeter and make a pass. That teammate that just received the pass will now bring it in the playing area trying to find another teammate to pass it to while the other teammate takes their place on the perimeter. Play for 1 minute, the team in possession of the most balls, wins! Play best of 5, or 7 depending on your time. It’s really fun, engaging, and players will learn how to play within the chaos inside the box and finding teammates to pass to around the field.

Coaching Points & Principles

  • Groundballs! The game starts with a live ground ball, that is the best time to gain possession!
  • Ball Control – Players must be able to cradle through chaos inside the box to find open space and teammates to pass to
  • Communication – Perimeter players should be ready to receive a pass, and calling “ONE MORE” or HERE”S HELP”
  • Defense – If you don’t win a ground ball and are stuck on defense inside, try to force bad passes/turnovers.

Station 1: 2v1 Recognition Shooting

Set Up

Put 2 lines up to about 5 yards apart. Add a coach in the middle as the defender. We are starting this drill with a ground ball, you can start with a pass as well. The players will criss cross attacking the goal. The player clearing through, is cutting under their teammate which we want to emphasize. As the ball carrier attacks the goal, the coach will either slide to the ball, or slide to teammate without the ball. Players must recognize the slide and react to it!

Coaching Points and Principle

  • Spacing – Clearing space under your teammate, not above
  • Read the defense – when a slide comes to you, we want to move the ball. When you have free space, we want you to take it and shoot it
  • Shooting – shot placement and finishing the ball on cage
  • Passing – making great passes to your teammates

Progressions

  • Make it a 3v2
  • Set up on the wings for a different look
  • Use constraints like off-hand only

Station 2: Take the Space

Summary

An introduction to dodging with youth players that works on learning how to attack the free space to the goal, no matter what hand they use

Set Up

Put players on the wing with balls, and a coach about a stick length away. The player will start with a ball, and facing away from the goal/coach. When Coach says “go” or blow whistle, the player will flip their hips, and during that time, coach will shade high or low. The player will then attack the space, given and get a shot off to the goal

Coaching Points and Principles

  • Quick reactions! Try to attack the space quickly
  • If attacking a space that forces your weak hand, you can either protect and stay strong with your dominant hand or switch to improve your weak hand.

Progressions

  • Add a double dodge
  • Create more constraints for the players
