A fun variation and take off this classic passing drills

Set Up

Put your players In groups of 8 or 10, and set up 4 lines all right next to each other, in the shape of a + sign. The first players in each line are on offense, and the second are defenders/trailers. Start with 1 ball in 1 line, with a live ground ball. the first player in line must top attack and get the ball, with the 2nd player defending as the trailer. The defender will shade one side, and the offense must roll to space and adjacent line teammate must pop out to support. Connect a pass to the outside so the trail defenders can intercept the pass, and continue until you get all the way around the circle. Reset and start a ground ball with a new line

Shooting Drill with Jenny Levy, University of North Carolina Head Women’s Lacrosse Coach

A high volume shooting drill that emphasizes recognition and finishing

Set Up

Put 3 Offensive Players behind the cage and 2 defensive lines up top. Coach will start the drill by throwing the ball into an offensive player. The defense will get into the lower crease area and play a zone like defense . The offense will spread out and move the ball fast to try and find the open teammate for a quick shot!

Coaching Points & Principles

Progressions

  • A defender can challenge the ball behind the cage

  • Defense – Stay above Goal line extended, but need to have 1 player prevent the ball carrier from going around the crease, and the other be in a backside zone position to slide/move when the ball is passed
  • Offense – Stay spread out, find space,  and move the ball quickly to get an optimal shot!
2v2 Game with Outlet - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

2v2 Double Team & Outlet is a defensive-focused small-area game for intermediate through advanced players that develops on-ball positioning, aggressive slides, double teams, and recovery while challenging the offense to escape pressure through an outlet.

SET UP

Set up a 2v2 with an offensive outlet positioned away from the action. The ball starts with a pass to one offensive player as their defender approaches and forces them down the wing. The passer cuts through to create space, allowing the ball carrier to attack and force the second defender to slide. Once the slide comes, the defenders lock in the double team while the offense must escape pressure by finding the outlet, who can then move the ball to the middle for a finish. Defense earns points only for caused turnovers, not goalie saves.

COACHING POINTS & PRINCIPLES

2v2 W Outlet Preview
  • Force Down the Wing: Take away the middle with your positioning and stick, influencing the ball carrier toward less dangerous space.
  • Slide & Lock In: Slide aggressively toward the ball carrier’s stick and establish the double team—one defender plays body while the other looks for the check.
  • Recover With Urgency: If the offense escapes the double team, immediately recover toward the middle and look to disrupt or intercept the next pass.

Partner Passing Progression w/ Shuffle

1: Stick Upfield

2: Catch Cross Face, Throw with Upfield Hand

3. Catch with Inside, Throw with Outside Hand
