Stickwork and Shooting w/ Stations

Please Note: The practice is designed to bring value across multiple age levels. You can use this as a foundation to build and develop your own practice. With that being said, we highly encourage you to adjust the drills based on your team’s age and skill levels. Lacrosse Drive should always be used as a starting point — you can make drills easier or harder by changing the constraints.

To make a drill easier, you might Increase the playing area, reduce the number of defenders or rules, add time or space to make decisions

To make a drill harder, you might: Shrink the field or add boundaries, add defenders or touch restrictions (e.g., “one-pass before shooting”), or Limit time or space to force faster decisions

Small adjustments to field size, player numbers, and rules can significantly change the challenge level while maintaining the same core learning goal.

Theme Description & Objected: Stickwork & Shooting

Stickwork & Shooting is designed to help players build strong fundamentals with the ball while developing confidence as finishers. The objective of this plan is to teach young athletes proper mechanics for passing, catching, cradling, and shooting through simple, engaging drills that maximize touches and reinforce good habits. Players learn how to control their stick, aim with intention, and shoot with balance and technique—all in a fun, supportive environment. By combining foundational stickwork with age-appropriate shooting reps, this plan helps players grow into skilled, confident attackers who enjoy scoring and sharing the ball.

Activity 1: Musical Groundballs

Start practice with this fun gorundball game!

SET UP

Create a small field using cones and put all the players shoulder to shoulder about 8 yards away from the game area. Coach will place as many balls -1 in the game area, than there are players. You have 8 players, use 7 balls. On the whistle, each player must go get a ball, and bring it back to the start line. The 8th player who doesn’t win a ball, can play defense and try to steal until everyone has returned back to the start point. Continue this progression until its 2v1 and you can declare a winner!

PRINCIPLES AND COACHING POINTS

  • Ground Balls,  Competing, Hustle, hav fun!

PROGRESSIONS

  • Use less balls to make game go faster (8 players 6 balls, then 6 players 4 Balls…

Station 1: Windup Shooting Progressions

Start with just the windup first, then add in escapes if you have time

Set Up

Players will have balls about 8-10 yards away from the goal. We want to start by getting loaded in a comfortable position, and have our Butt End of our stick, face our target. Each individual will have a different ‘form’ when shooting depending on their body size, arm length, etc.. but it’s important we stick to the principles of our shot. They will take 3 steps, and drive through the shot transferring their weight from back to front, and releasing that top hand. Get 40-50 Reps in a few minutes for a pre practice warm up

Coaching Points and Principles

  • Get your hands extended and comfortable, aiming your butt end to the goal
  • Transfer weight from back to front, like a baseball pitcher or a football QB then they throw
  • Release your to hand, think about driving your knuckles into the ground, or rolling your hand top hand over, whatever feel better. This gives the ball the snap out of your stick

Progressions

  • Add in a guided defender and work on some escapes like a jab step, roll dodge, or facedodge

Station 2: Tight 1v1 w/ Inside Finishing

Summary

For young players, this is a good drill to work on understanding body position when dodging toward the goal

Set Up

Put an offense and defense player in play. They start with the offense shielding stick with body, leaning into the defender. The defense leans back with hands/stick on hip on opponent. On whistle, the offense player attacks the goal, and does so by feeling the weight/positon of the defender, and attacking the opposite.

Coaching Points & Principles

  • Stick Protection!
  • Use Body to feel the pressure angle from defender..  roll dodges and top side drives will work but find the natural escape
  • Defense work on recovery angles
  • Do this drill from all areas of the field

Progressions

Have players start with small separation, so the defense must approach.

Station 3: Shooting on The Run Drill

2 Cone Shooting Drill

A great drill to work on your shot on the run, getting back down hill!

Set Up

About 8-10 yards away from goal, set up 2 cones about 5 yards apart, 45 degrees from goal. Players will dodge towards the top cone, and start to get loaded. They will then run over the second cone, getting back down hill running toward the cage!

Coaching Points & Principles

  • Keep your feet moving, make sure players don’t stop their feet and they run through the second cone
  • Work on shooting overhand, as this will help with momentum getting back toward the goal

Activity 5: 32 Break Game

Finish practice with this fun, competitive game!

Summary

A fun & fast paced transition game for youth players that helps build game IQ!

32 Break Game

Set Up

Create a small field area game, using the retraining area or cones. Put 2 attack and 1 defense on each end, and midfielders lined up on the sideline. A coach with balls, will roll a live ground ball in, and players will play a live game. In this game, there will always be a 3v2 on each side, so the offense has the advantage. When there is a dead ball, coach can roll a new contested ball in, or start a new group!

Coaching Points & Principles

  • Offense – Find the advantage! play fast by finding an open teammate to get the best shot!
  • Defense – Communicate, play zone like where you need too pressure the ball with backside support to play the next pass

Progressions

  • Play 4v3, set up 2 midfielders of each team
  • If you don’t have goalies, turn the goals upside down to make it harder to score
