Wide World of Sports

Please Note:The practice is designed to bring value across multiple age levels. You can use this as a foundation to build and develop your own practice. With that being said, we highly encourage you to adjust the drills based on your team’s age and skill levels. Lacrosse Drive should always be used as a starting point — you can make drills easier or harder by changing the constraints.

To make a drill easier, you might Increase the playing area, reduce the number of defenders or rules, add time or space to make decisions

To make a drill harder, you might: Shrink the field or add boundaries, add defenders or touch restrictions (e.g., “one-pass before shooting”), or Limit time or space to force faster decisions

Small adjustments to field size, player numbers, and rules can significantly change the challenge level while maintaining the same core learning goal.

Theme Description & Objected: Wide World of Sports

Around the World of Sports is designed to help players develop athleticism and game sense by using drills inspired by other sports. The objective of this plan is to show young athletes how movement patterns, spacing, and decision-making from games like basketball, soccer, hockey, and football translate directly to lacrosse. Through fun, familiar, and fast-paced activities, players learn skills like cutting, give-and-go passing, shielding, and transition play in new and engaging ways. This approach broadens their athletic foundation, builds coordination, and helps them understand lacrosse concepts through the lens of multiple sports—making learning both intuitive and exciting.

Activity 1: Scan the Field Warm Up

Set Up

Set up a designated area on the field using cones or lines. In this case, we are using the center circle, which is a good space for the size of this group. Every player will have a ball and will run/cradle through the area. They need to keep their HEAD UP while they are running so they dont run into a teammate. You can see in the video, players are naturally also getting some escape work in when they need to change direction to not hit a teammate!

  1. Progression 1 – After they have been running for 15-20 seconds, coach will blow a whistle and every player will stop, bounce away a little bit, and get their hands up like they want to make a pass. Have them hold position for a few seconds
  2. Progression 2 – Once coach blows the whistle, they must find a teammate and exchange balls with, by rolling it out for a ground ball (Communicate!)

Coaching Points and Principles

  • Run and cradle with your stick protected, close to your shoulders
  • HEAD UP! Dont look down, keep your eyes up so you are running into space that doesn’t have another player
  • Look for natural escapes like Jabs, splits, etc.. and reinforce great job to the kids
  • Communicate – When you get to the ground ball progression, communicate with teammate so you both expect the same thing

Progressions

  • Instead of a ground ball, pass to a teammate to make it more challenging
  • Make the space smaller and more challenging, or larger for less experienced players

Activity 2: 3v1 Rondo

Add in more defense to make it more challenging!

3v1 Rondo

Set Up

Create a playing area using cones or lines on the field. There will be 3 offensive player on the outside, and 1 defender inside. The players on the outside will play keep away. The defender will try to be deceptive, move towards the passer to knock down or intercept passes! Play for 30 seconds then switch the players. You can also sub a player in quicker, off they intercept or knock down a pass.

Coaching Points and Principles

  • Offense – Move your feet to make good passes. Off ball SHOW TARGET and call for help
  • Defense – Keep your stick in the air in passing lanes / use deception

Progressions

  • Play 4v2
  • Make it harder for the offender and play 3v2 or 4v3

Activity 3: Tic Tac Toe Relay Game

A change of pace and fun game to do with younger players that emphasizes teamwork and hustle!

Set Up

Using Lacrosse sticks, create a tic tac toe board on the field. Split the players up into 2 teams, and each team has different colored balls. This is like a relay race as well, so the next teammate cannot run to place a ball, until their teammate returns. Play until the team makes 3 in a row!

Coaching Points and Principles

  • Teamwork!
  • Working Hard
  • Awareness

Coaching Points and Principles

  • Teamwork!
  • Play with movement

Activity 5: Scoop and Chase Small Area Game

Set Up

Split the group into two teams, and put them in alternating lines at the midfield. On a Half field, we would have 4-6 lines of each color, being a full team drill. If working in smaller spaces like video, you can do 3-4 of each color. The drill starts with coach rolling a live ground ball into the play. The first player in each line will go try to win the ground ball. Which ever team wins the ball, gets the ball to the goalie and initiates a clear. If you don’t have a goalie, just have the players clear to a Coach up top. Once they successfully clear the ball, they will go back in on offense, and attack the goal. Coaches can manipulate the rules or constraints to make uneven situations or get players to explore other team concepts like picks, off ball play, etc..

Coaching Points and Principles

  • Ground balls – players should be working hard to win ground balls to start the drill
  • Clearing – Team is spread out and finding open spaces
  • Even & Uneven scenarios

Progressions

  • Add extra players in on offense to creat uneven looks
  • Number the lines up top, so only select players go into the drill (1,2,3,4 would be a 2v2 groundball play)
  • Shot Clock – Once on offense, create a shot clock to speed up play
