SET UP
Set up two faceoff players in their normal stance with the ball between their sticks. Rather than using a predictable “down, set” cadence, players simply get into position and wait for a random “go” call, forcing them to stay mentally engaged and react rather than anticipate. Before each rep, players should take a slow, controlled breath, stay light on their hands, and focus their eyes on the ball. On the call, both players execute only their first move, then stop and assess their position. Evaluate whether they got down over the ball, moved down the line to get the ball into the throat of the stick, and drove the left hand diagonally. Reset and repeat, keeping the emphasis on recognition and reaction rather than completing the entire faceoff.
COACHING POINTS & PRINCIPLES
- React, Don’t Guess: Stay focused on the ball and wait for the actual call instead of trying to anticipate when it is coming.
- Win the First Move: Focus on getting down over the ball, moving down the line, and executing the left-hand diagonal immediately off the whistle.
- Reset Mentally: Use controlled breathing between reps to stay relaxed and focused—winning the whistle more consistently puts you in better positions to control the faceoff.
