Behind-the-Back is a valuable skill that gives players another way to pass or shoot when space, body position, or defensive pressure takes away a traditional release.
Players should begin by getting the stick loaded near the hip, with the opposite shoulder pointed toward the target. From this position, use a controlled pulling motion with the hands to bring the stick up and release it directly off the back shoulder.
The emphasis should be on control, timing, and accuracy rather than power. Players should avoid wildly swinging the stick around their body. Instead, keep the motion compact and allow the stick to travel naturally from the hip, around the back shoulder, and toward the target. As players become comfortable, the behind-the-back becomes especially useful for making plays in tight spaces, disguising passes, maintaining vision, and increasing passing or shooting angles when a traditional release isn’t available.
