Drifts are a ball-control and dodging skill used to manipulate a defender’s approach and create a better angle to re-attack. The ball carrier stays square to the defender with their hips while slowly drifting in one direction. The goal is to get the defender moving, encourage them to take a poor approach angle, and then recognize the opportunity to change pace and re-attack the space they give up.
Stick protection is critical during the drift. Players should maintain a strong two-handed grip and turn their shoulders away from pressure to protect the stick while keeping their hips square to the defender. Avoid completely turning away or retreating from the matchup—the player should remain in an attacking position with eyes up. Once the defender overcommits or takes a bad angle, plant, change pace, and attack the advantage.
