How to properly catch a pass in lacrosse
Strong catching starts with soft hands and good stick position. Players should keep the stick up and in front of their body, clearly showing a target to the passer. This early stick presentation helps with timing, vision, and readiness.
As the ball approaches, the hands stay relaxed rather than rigid. Players should imagine catching a water balloon or an egg, allowing the stick to “give” slightly as the ball hits the pocket. This cushioning motion absorbs the force of the pass and prevents the ball from bouncing out.
The top hand guides the stick while the bottom hand supports the motion, pulling the stick back just enough to secure the ball smoothly. By receiving the pass with soft hands and controlled movement, players improve consistency, confidence, and overall ball control.
