The Angle of Approach determines where we allow the offensive player to go. As we approach, work to get your top foot and shoulder to the topside, positioning your body between the ball carrier and the middle of the field. The goal is to take away the house and influence the ball carrier toward less dangerous areas of the field, like the alleys or sidelines
- Top foot & shoulder topside — establish your leverage as you approach.
- Take away the middle — don’t give the ball carrier a direct path to the house.
- Approach on an angle — influence where the offensive player can go.
- Protect the house — prioritize the most dangerous area of the field.
- Use your body first — positioning and footwork should take away space before your stick does.
- Stay under control — break down without giving up your topside leverage.
- Influence outside — force the ball carrier toward less dangerous space.
- Maintain your angle — adjust your feet as they move so they can’t easily re-attack the middle.
