When defending at Goal Line Extended (GLE), our approach depends on where we establish position. Below GLE, turning the ball carrier back underneath can be effective, especially when supported by a strong slide package. However, once an attacker gains GLE, trying to turn them back can create an opportunity for an inside roll. At that point, emphasize maintaining position and using their momentum to drive them away from the goal and up and out, rather than allowing them to get underneath.
- Know your position — recognize whether you have established leverage below or above GLE.
- Below GLE: turn them back — good positioning can allow you to force the attacker underneath and behind the cage.
- Trust your slide package — turning a player back can work well when the defense is prepared to support it.
- Be aware of the inside roll — overcommitting to topside leverage can open the door underneath.
- Past GLE: drive them out — once they gain GLE, use their momentum to push them away from the cage.
- Up & out — influence their path toward the sideline rather than back toward the crease.
- Maintain body position — stay connected without reaching or opening an inside lane.
- Protect the inside — above all, don’t allow an easy path back toward the front of the goal.
