Skill Session: Defense Drop Steps & Changing Direction

Defense Drop Steps & Changing Direction: Enhancing Movement and Control

When an offensive player changes direction, defenders must move efficiently to stay balanced and connected. The drop step allows the defender to turn and run without crossing their feet or losing body position. As the offensive player plants and redirects, the defender quickly opens the hips by stepping back with the foot closest to the direction of the dodge.

The drop step creates a smooth transition from lateral movement to sprinting, helping the defender maintain proper angle and recovery speed. Instead of lunging or reaching, the defender stays low, keeps the chest square to the opponent, and uses short, controlled steps to re-engage.

By using a clean drop step, defenders can match changes in speed and direction, recover leverage, and stay between the ball carrier and the most dangerous space on the field.
