Skill Session: Disrupt & Lift

When defending on-ball, maintain consistent pressure on the ball carrier’s hands without relying on wild or unnecessary checks. Stay under control and make the offensive player uncomfortable. As they begin their passing or shooting motion, use a well-timed lift on the bottom/anchor hand to disrupt their stick path, taking away power and accuracy.

  • Pressure the hands — stay active and connected without overchecking.
  • Stay controlled — good positioning comes before throwing checks.
  • Wait for the motion — look for the hands to begin a pass or shot.
  • Lift the anchor hand — attack underneath the bottom hand with your stick.
  • Disrupt the stick path — affect the accuracy and power of the pass or shot.
  • Timing over force — a well-timed lift is more effective than a big check.
  • Maintain position — don’t sacrifice defensive positioning to make the lift.
