Proper Ground Ball Technique in Lacrosse
Winning ground balls starts with getting balanced and low. Players should bend at the knees and hips, keeping their chest up and eyes forward as they approach the ball. A low, athletic position allows the player to stay strong through contact and adjust if the ball moves.
As the ball is picked up, the stick should come immediately to the chest or face area to protect it from pressure. Bringing the stick in tight secures possession and prepares the player to make the next play quickly.
After the pickup, players should accelerate through the ball and continue moving rather than stopping. Running through the ground ball helps evade pressure, creates separation from opponents, and turns a loose-ball situation into an advantage. The goal is not just to pick up the ball, but to exit with speed and control.
