Skill Session: Hand Exchanges when Cradling

Changing Hands While Cradling and Changing Direction

Changing hands allows a player to protect the stick, maintain balance, and attack space when changing direction. The exchange should happen early and smoothly, before pressure arrives, rather than as a reaction to a defender. By switching hands in rhythm with the cradle, players stay fluid and in control.

As the player changes direction, the stick moves across the body while staying tight and protected. The hands slide and reposition naturally, keeping the head of the stick stable and the ball secure in the pocket. The body and stick move together, allowing the player to accelerate into the new lane without breaking stride.

A clean hand change keeps the stick away from defenders, opens up passing and shooting angles, and supports efficient movement. When done correctly, the exchange feels seamless and allows players to stay aggressive while maintaining possession.
