Skill Session: Over the Head Check

The Over-the-Head Check is an advanced check that relies more on timing, positioning, and proper stick movement than force. Run with the offensive player and patiently time when their stick becomes exposed. When the opportunity is there, point the butt end of your stick toward the sky and use your hands to guide the stick in a tight C-like motionover and around the opponent, finishing through their stick to disrupt or dislodge the ball.

  • Run with the opponent — don’t rush the check; match their movement first.
  • Time the opportunity — wait until their stick and hands become exposed.
  • Butt end to the sky — this creates the proper stick angle to get up and over.
  • Make a “C” motion — work the stick over, around, and down toward their stick.
  • Use your hands — guide the stick with coordinated hand movement rather than swinging wildly.
  • Stay balanced — don’t sacrifice body position or allow the check to slow your feet.
  • Timing over power — a properly timed check requires very little force.
  • Advanced variation — more skilled players can disguise the check, changing their stick angle and timing to catch the ball carrier unexpectedly.
