Skill Session: The Faceoff Clamp w/ Joe Nardella

Executing the Faceoff Clamp in Lacrosse

The faceoff clamp is about speed, leverage, and control at the moment of the whistle. The player starts in a balanced stance with weight centered and hands relaxed, allowing for a quick first movement. The stick head is positioned square and flat to the ground so it can seal the ball efficiently.

At the whistle, the player drives the top hand down and forward while pulling slightly with the bottom hand, snapping the head of the stick over the ball. The motion is quick and compact, using wrist strength and body weight rather than a large arm movement. Keeping the head low and tight helps trap the ball cleanly.

Once the ball is secured, the player stays low and balanced, ready to rake, pop, or move the ball to space. A strong clamp wins initial possession by combining fast hands, proper leverage, and body control.
