Goalie Star Movement is a fundamental footwork drill for goalies of all levels that develops efficient crease movement, positioning, and confidence when reacting to different passes and drives.
SET UP
Start the goalie on one pipe and work through a star-shaped movement pattern: move cross-crease and seal the opposite pipe, move to the center hash, then to the three-quarter spot, and finish with a drop step back to the starting pipe. Repeat from both sides. On cross-crease movement, goalies can either drop step into the goal and attack out or move flat across the goal line, but should avoid following their arc across the top.
COACHING POINTS & PRINCIPLES
- Move Efficiently: Take the shortest, most efficient path between positions while staying balanced and ready.
- Seal the Pipe: Finish cross-crease movements by getting set and taking away the inside pipe.
- Don’t Follow the Arc: On cross-crease passes, avoid traveling across the top of the arc, which can expose the inside post.
