Wing Shooting with Decisions

Set Up

Put a line of players on the wing, and another line on the GLE (Goal Line Extended). To start, place 1 player about 5 yards away from the wind player. To initiate the drill, the players on GLE will pass the ball up to the wing where a player is ready to catch it loaded. As they catch the ball, the defender will shade high or low for the offensive player to see what space is afforded, and either get a shot over the top or underneath. The shooter becomes the defender, the defender goes to the passing line, and the passer goes to the shooting line.

Coaching Points and Principles

  • Wing players – be read to catch it loaded like you want to shoot the ball
  • Defenders, shade high or low, you can exaggerate more if working with a younger group or exaggerate less to challenge a more experienced player
  • Shots on the run, get back down hill when sweeping through middle
  • Shots underneath, try to keep the stick on the strong side keeping your shooting angle higher

Progressions

  • Force a double dodge, make the offensive player make 2 moves
  • Execute in different parts of the field
