Over the Net Shooting

Summary

A great shooting drill to get players back working on their overhand shot

Set Up

We talk a lot about deception and how players should learn how to shoot from different angles and release points, but at the end of the day we try to focus on that overhand shot because it’s the most consistent and you have the most variability as far as ball placement deception. We’re gonna have a second goal about 10-12 yards away from the goal you’re shooting on and the players are going do a step down shot. They have to shoot over the top of the cage and then for the finishing of it, we want them to finish on the low side of the goal so it’s a high to low shot. Because ultimately what we’re teaching here is trying to get that stick turned over as you release it so they can really emphasize getting their entire body into the shot

Coaching Points & Principles

  • Get your hands away from your body, in a comfortable spot
  • Release the top hand at the top – Snap hardtop force the ball back down

Progressions

  • Shoot around the goal, more of a sidearm shot, to work on shooting through screens. If you are a righty, shooting around the cage, try to pull the ball back to the left side of the cage
