Full-Field 5v4 is a continuous transition game for high school and advanced players that connects clearing, riding, and unsettled offense while forcing players to recognize and attack advantages quickly.
SET UP
Set up attack and defense at both ends of the field in opposite colors, with midfield lines for each team positioned on both wings near midfield. Start with a 5v4 at one end, playing until a goal, save, turnover, or dead ball; a 10–15 second shot clock can be added to keep possessions quick. Once the defense gains possession, they immediately break out into a clear while the offensive team rides. The defending midfielder helps initiate the clear and moves the ball upfield to one of the midfielders entering from the wing. Coaches can designate whether the near-side or far-side midfielder enters to vary the transition and approach into the offensive end. The clearing team then attacks the opposite goal in a new 5v4, creating a continuous full-field transition game.
COACHING POINTS & PRINCIPLES
- Clear With Purpose: On a save or turnover, immediately spread the field, break out, and move the ball forward to create transition before the opponent can recover.
- Recognize the Advantage: Offensively, identify the open player, move the ball quickly, and attack the 5v4 before the defense can organize.
- Transition Roles Quickly: Defensive midfielders become part of the clear, while offensive players immediately ride before exiting—reinforcing the quick change from offense to defense and defense to offense.
