House Principles & Systems vs a 2-2-2

Details

Against a 2–2–2, protecting the house is about staying balanced and connected while the offense tries to create space through pairs and two-man actions. We maintain our core structure: a strong on-ball defender applying pressure, two adjacent defenders in tight support ready to show help, and the crease defender as the primary slide, responsible for stopping any dodge that threatens the middle. The two backside defenders stay loaded inside the house, forming that second layer, reading the play, ready to “slide the slide,” and taking away skip lanes or quick crease looks. Because the 2–2–2 naturally sets up picks and off-ball exchanges, communication and discipline are critical—defenders must call out actions early, stay physical through picks, and avoid getting pulled too far outside. The goal is to keep everything in front, protect the middle at all costs, and force the offense into low-percentage shots from the perimeter while always being in position to recover.
