Playing Fast & Transition

Please Note: The practice is designed to bring value across multiple age levels. You can use this as a foundation to build and develop your own practice. With that being said, we highly encourage you to adjust the drills based on your team’s age and skill levels. Lacrosse Drive should always be used as a starting point — you can make drills easier or harder by changing the constraints.

To make a drill easier, you might Increase the playing area, reduce the number of defenders or rules, add time or space to make decisions

To make a drill harder, you might: Shrink the field or add boundaries, add defenders or touch restrictions (e.g., “one-pass before shooting”), or Limit time or space to force faster decisions

Small adjustments to field size, player numbers, and rules can significantly change the challenge level while maintaining the same core learning goal.

Theme Description & Objected: Playing Fast & Transition

Playing Fast & Transition is designed to teach players how to move the ball quickly, react to changes in possession, and take advantage of fast-break opportunities. The objective of this plan is to help young athletes understand the flow of transition—getting up the field with pace, finding open teammates, and making simple, smart choices while on the run. Through fun, small-sided drills that emphasize quick outlets, early passes, and attacking space, players learn to play fast without rushing, stay organized during chaotic moments, and build confidence in both offensive and defensive transition. This approach boosts game IQ, encourages unselfish play, and keeps the game exciting and energetic.

Activity 4: Half Field Transition & Shooting

Summary

This drill works on clearing passes and transition opportunities. You can do this on 1 end of the field, or set up in both ends, but working independently.

Set Up

Put 2 Attack players on the crease, a line of defense at the lower retraining line, and a line of midfielders at the opposite far side midfield line. There will be a goalie in the low corner, or at X with the balls. The drill starts with the goalie passing a ball to a defender. When the defender receives the ball, they will start moving up field, and a midfielder form the opposite sit will cut towards their teammate to receive a pass. We want the midfielder to catch and pass the ball quickly to the lower attack player curing for the ball. The attack will make 1 pass, and finish with a shot. Simultaneously, the midfielder will continue cutting to the goal to receive a pass from the Goalie/Coach for a transition shot.
