Skill Session: Changing Planes

Changing planes is about using your stick position to influence the goalie before the ball leaves your stick. By keeping your hands and stick high as you prepare to shoot, you encourage the goalie to stay tall and respect a high release. From there, change the plane of the shot by finishing low and away—especially off-stick side—forcing the goalie to move from high to low and across the cage. The greater the change in level you can create while maintaining a quick, deceptive release, the more difficult it becomes for the goalie to track and make the save.
