Skill Session: Defense Approaches & Angles

Proper Defensive Approaches

A strong defensive approach begins with balance and controlled footwork. As a defender closes space, they should break down with short, choppy steps rather than long strides. This keeps the body under control, the feet active, and the defender ready to react in any direction.

The defender’s hips stay low, chest up, and weight centered so they can move laterally without crossing their feet. By staying balanced, the defender can match the ball carrier’s speed and avoid overcommitting.

Proper angles are critical during the approach. Instead of running straight at the ball carrier, defenders should take an angle that guides the opponent away from the middle of the field and toward less dangerous space. Good angles reduce speed, limit options, and put the defender in position to apply pressure without sacrificing control.
