A great spacing drill designed by Dan Chemotti, Univ. of Richmond
Set Up
Create a grid in front of the goal, for spacing concepts. Start with 4 players on the perimeter and have them pass the ball around. As the ball carrier/dodger carries the ball, the adjacent player will do the following options:
- Shallow cut – Cut through the grid, and fill the space the dodger just left
- Drift – Imagine the dodger pushing you away, like on a strong, but staying within the playmaking area, dont drift to sidelines
- Pick – V-cut into the grid, and then set a pick for dodger
Once the 4 players complete all three motions, they can take a shot
Coaching Points & Principles
- The Ball carrier is the dodger, so we are working on off ball spacing to create scoring advantagets
- Drifts – Players should drift facing their teammates, ready to receive a pass if need be. All players should be moving together like a string to maintain proper spacing
- Picks – Always Arrive Alone (AAA) – Make sure they v-cut into the grid before setting the pick.
Progressions
- Add a crease player, and finish with a shot on crease. Crease player will be moving in and around the grid deepening on where ball is, If its up top, they are on lower grid, if at X, they are in upper grid
