Summary

3-Cone Defensive Approaches is a defensive footwork drill for all levels that develops approach angles, controlled breakdowns, and the ability to read and react to offensive movement while protecting the middle of the field.

SET UP

Set up four cones in a T formation, with the starting cone 5–8 yards from the top cone and two additional cones 4–5 yards to either side. Position an offensive and defensive player in the middle, facing opposite directions. On the whistle, the defender runs around the starting cone while the offensive player runs around one of the other three cones. The defender must quickly approach, break down, and prevent the offensive player from reaching the middle. Begin with predetermined cones, then progress to allowing the offense to choose their cone, forcing the defender to read and react.

COACHING POINTS & PRINCIPLES

  • Approach Under Control: Close the distance quickly, then break down into a balanced defensive stance without overcommitting.

  • Protect the Middle: Use proper approach angles and body positioning to influence the offensive player toward the outside.

  • Read & React: Recognize the offensive player’s movement and adjust your approach rather than anticipating a predetermined direction.
