3v2 Crossfire

Set Up

Split the playing field in half (side by side) and place a goal on each, 2 goals total. After you split your players into two teams, let’s say blue and white for this example. Place 3 offensive blue player and 2 defensive white players on 1 side, and then place 3 offensive white players and 2 defensive blue players on the other side. The players are not allowed to cross their field lines, but then can pass to a teammate over. For example, if the blue goalie makes a save they can either outlet to their defensive teammate on that side, or they can pass to an offensives player on the opposites side. Play as if it’s game-like, and keep score. It’s a fun alternative way to get a scrimmage feel in, working on these situational concepts.

Coaching Points and Principles

  • Defensive – playin short handed, so play within those principles like you would in a zone. Communicate and try to force the offensive to take poor shots
  • Offense, move the ball quick, move your feet to get to open space for passes, and finish on this quick hitting shots

Progressions

  • Play 4v3 of 5v4 on each side
  • Add a shot clock for faster play
  • Add in Constraints, example the offensive must trigger possession with a pick
